The Saint Helena Police Directorate ( German  Police Directorate of St. Helena ) is the highest authority to ensure law and order in the British overseas territory of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha . However, it only has legal control in the equal sub-areas of St. Helena and Ascension , but not in Tristan da Cunha . There is an independent police officer from the local administration there.

In addition to the Saint Helena Police Service , the police of the overseas territory, the directorate on St. Helena also takes on the tasks of the prison system , immigration , fire brigade , water rescue and disaster control .

The overseas police service is divided into an active police unit, a unit for crime and an administrative unit. A separate department was set up for the island of Ascension. In total, the police service had more than 40 employees, including six at Ascension (as of 2014).

Sea Rescue Service

The water rescue department has 12 employees. These use three lifeboats.

Fire and Rescue Service

The fire fighting and rescue services department has 10 employees. With the opening of St. Helena Airport, they will also take over the fire and rescue services there.

Emergency Coordination and Planning

The disaster control department takes on all planning tasks for disaster control. You have two employees.

Her Majesty's Prison Service

St. Helena has a prison that is under the Royal Correctional Department of the Police Directorate. 18 employees belong to the department around the prison, which was built in 1826.

The construction of a new prison had been planned since 2013. After completion, it will be the largest prison in the world in terms of population and contain 26 cells for up to 40 prisoners. It should also include a high-security wing. In September 2019, the construction of the new prison in Bottom Woods was finally approved.
