Poland operates at this location research activities as one of the nations that the Svalbard Treaty signed with - an existing since 1920 international treaty, which Norway grants sovereignty over Svalbard, but allows the signatory states, economically equal rights to work. The first major scientific expedition of the Polish Academy of Sciences to Hornsund took place in 1957, when the station was also built. From 1961 to 1977 it was used by Polish scientists in the summer months, until the establishment of the national park in 1973, by hunters. Since its modernization in 1978, it has been manned all year round. In the immediate vicinity of the station, on the Wilczekodden peninsula, Polish scientists erected a ten meter high cross in 1982.

In the summer of 2013 10 scientists lived and worked in the research station.

Flora and fauna

The flat coastal areas around the station are covered with species-rich tundra vegetation . The surrounding mountain slopes and cliffs are breeding grounds for numerous sea birds in summer . The most common species is the crab grebe . Arctic foxes and reindeer can also be found around the station. In addition, the Hornsund is the most important passage for polar bears between the western part of Spitsbergen and the Storfjord in the east.

research

Since the station was founded, the focus of research has changed as required. Research is currently being carried out primarily in the field of atmospheric and geosciences . The research in the station covers u. a. the areas of meteorology , seismology , geomagnetism and also glaciology . In addition to the Polish crew, the station also has the capacity to accommodate other scientists for their own activities.
