The components are manufactured by the German company Siemens . The Polyalert project was started in 2009 by the FOCP based on a decision by the Swiss Federal Council . In autumn 2015, the last siren could be converted to the new control system. The Polycom trunked radio system is primarily used as the network infrastructure . In order to achieve failure safety, the sirens can also be controlled via the RDS system. Before the introduction of Polyalert, the sirens were controlled by the cabled Infranet system (SFI-457) from Swisscom . One of the reasons to start Polyalert was the consideration of enabling siren control independently of the services of private providers.

During the Swiss siren test on February 7, 2018, a technical malfunction occurred in the central system for remote control of the sirens. The analysis showed that it was a software error that led to a disruption of the data exchange between the central Polyalert database and the corresponding application servers. In the meantime, the necessary troubleshooting measures have been implemented. The water alarm was particularly affected by these problems. The extraordinary siren test took place across Switzerland on Wednesday, May 23, 2018.
