architecture

The Gothic collegiate church from the 14th century as a three-aisled hall church with an ambulatory choir and a chapel wreath is considered a major work of Austrian high Gothic, which took over the cathedral floor plan of the French Cistercian architecture from Clairvaux monastery and for the first time combines it with a hall plan . The towering baroque western front of the church, the main work of the architect Matthias Steinl , was built with the baroque master builder Joseph Munggenast .

Furnishing

The original Gothic high altar was probably destroyed in the Battle of Zwettl (1427). In the years 1516 to 1525, a new high altar in the late Gothic style was purchased under Abbot Erasmus von Leisser. The late Gothic high altar was dismantled in 1730 and the main piece was bought by Prince Alois II of Liechtenstein in 1757 and subsequently transferred to the St. Barbara's Church in Adamov u Brna as the Zwettler Altar . A former side altar was transferred to the Kleinzwettl branch church around 1730 .

Organs

In the years 1728 to 1731 Johann Ignaz Egedacher from Passau created the main organ, which is one of the largest and most expensive organ projects in Vienna and Lower Austria , Johann Dejobe 1726–1727 the choir organ (→ Organs of Zwettl Abbey ).

The remarkable uniform baroque interior was created with the participation of important masters of the Austrian high baroque.
