Matthias Steinl
Matthias Steinl or Steindl (* around 1644 ; † April 18, 1727 ) was an Austrian architect and sculptor . He was one of the first to establish the high baroque style in Austria .
Probably coming from Salzburg , it has been recorded in Breslau since 1682 , and was probably recommended to Vienna by the prince-bishop there . In 1688 he became an imperial chamber bone engraver .
His first architectural commission near Vienna (not documented) was the parish church of Laxenburg ( taken over by Carlo Antonio Carlone ), with which he realized the first high baroque building north of the Alps with curved facade elements from 1703.
His architectural designs were mainly realized by Joseph Munggenast , with whom he, like his uncle Jakob Prandtauer , often worked. These works include the tower of Stift Dürnstein (1718) and of Zwettl Monastery (1722).
Of his sculptural work, his equestrian statuettes of Leopold I and Joseph I , which show the two emperors fighting against the Turks , are particularly famous : the composition is dynamic and charged with tension.
In addition, his designs for altar rooms and choir stalls (for example for the parish church Maria Hietzing , the Peterskirche in Vienna and the collegiate church Klosterneuburg ) should be mentioned, which reveal a highly spatial structural concept that has been trained at the theater. In 2010 an ivory group Pluto kidnapped Proserpina from around 1700 was auctioned in Munich in the art trade.
