The apple rust mite ( Aculus sinnendali ) is a species of mite from the family of gall and rust mites (Eriophyidae). In Germany it did not appear to a greater extent as a pest on apple and pear trees until the 1980s .

features

With a length of 0.15-0.20 mm, the apple rust mite is much smaller than the red spider and can only be seen with a strong magnifying glass. The females grow slightly larger than the males. It is yellowish to brownish in color; the older they get, the darker their color.

distribution

The apple rust mite is common in apple growing areas in the USA and Canada as well as in Australia and Europe .

Way of life

The mites overwinter under the buds of young shoots. In spring they become active and colonize the buds. The female can lay 60 to 100 eggs. After oviposition, the larvae hatch within 10 days. They suck plant juices on the underside of fresh leaves. Five to six generations can arise in the course of a growing season. From the end of August the mites look for winter spots.

Damage

The apple rust mite does not form plant galls . The damage to the trees manifests itself in browned undersides of the leaves and a reduced fruit yield. If the infestation exceeds the damage threshold, there are often thousands of apple rust mites per leaf.
