Polygnotos ( Greek Πολύγνωτος Polýgnōtos ) was a Greek vase painter who lived around 450-420 BC. Was active in Athens . He is considered one of the most important vase painters of the red-figure style of the high classical period. Polygnotos received his training in the workshop of the niobid painter . He was based on monumental painting, such as that of the Polygnotos of Thasos , after whom he probably named himself. Polygnotos painted large vessels such as stamnoi , craters , hydria and neck amphorae , as well as Nolan amphorae and pelicas .

In addition to this famous vase painter, two other vase painters are known by the name of Polygnotos. In the scientific literature, however, they are referred to by the emergency names Lewis Painter and Nausicaa Painter .
