Polyklet (architect)

A Polyklet (Greek Πολύκλειτος, Polykleitos) names Pausanias as a Greek architect who in the 4th century BC. Should have been active in Epidaurus .

The only source is Pausanias 2, 27, 5: “But the Epidaurians had a theater in the sanctuary, which in my opinion is particularly worth seeing. ... But which architect could really compete with Polyklet in terms of shape and beauty? Because it was Polyklet who built both this theater and the rotunda. ”This implies Pausanias, the architect Polyklet with the sculptor of the same name Polyklet of the 5th century BC. This can be ruled out for chronological reasons, the rotunda ( Tholos ) was built around 370/60 BC. Started the theater towards the end of the 4th century BC. BC or later. The naming of Polyklet as an architect is based on a mistake made by Pausanias. Also, tholos and theater cannot have been designed by the same architect.
