Polymerus unifasciatus

Polymerus unifasciatus is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 4.9 to 6.9 millimeters long. The species of the genus Polymerus have a predominantly black or black and yellow basic color. The top of the body is covered with scale-like, golden or silvery hairs and the splints ( tibia ) have strong black thorns. Polymerus unifasciatus has a predominantly black pronotum with a narrow yellow rear margin. The corium is predominantly yellow. This coloring extends to both of its lateral margins and the border of the clavus. The nymphs are colored green.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is widespread in the Holarctic and occurs throughout Europe, North Africa and east to Siberia and across Central Asia to China, Japan, Korea and also in North America. In Central Europe, the species occurs everywhere and is usually common, although it is somewhat rarer in the north. Dry, warm and open habitats are settled. The species is rarely found in moderately humid, partially shaded places.

Way of life

Polymerus unifasciatus lives on different bedstraws ( Galium ), especially on meadow bedstraw ( Galium mollugo ) and real bedstraw ( Galium verum ). The overwintering takes place as an egg. The nymphs appear in May, the adults of the new generation from the end of June, in the south occasionally from the end of May. They can be observed until October, with only females being found from September onwards. The maximum occurrence of the species is in the mating season from late July to early August. Oviposition also takes place at this point. This takes place in small groups in the upper parts of the stems of the host plants.
