Pontécoulant is an impact crater to the south of the lunar front , southwest of Mare Australe , east of Hagecius crater . The crater rim is eroded with pronounced, multiple terracing , the interior of the crater is largely flat.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the French astronomer Philippe Gustave le Doulcet, comte de Pontécoulant .
