Pont de Naou-Hounts

The Pont de Naou-Hounts is a road bridge in the French Pyrenees . It is considered a remarkable example of the reinforced concrete bridges designed by the civil engineer Alexandre Sarrasin (1895–1976) .

It leads the route départementale D 125 about 4 km south of Bagnères-de-Luchon in the Haute-Garonne department over the Pique . In the mountain valley, immediately to the south or upstream of it, at an altitude of 820 m, is a meadow called Plan de la Hount or Demeure de Venasque .

The bridge, built between 1930 and 1931 by the Franki company according to Sarrasin's plans , crosses the Pique at an angle of 50 ° with a span of 52.9 m. It has a width of 7 m between the girders, which was originally divided into a 5.5 m wide carriageway and two 1.50 m wide sidewalks. The carriageway has now been widened at the expense of the sidewalks. There is currently a 19 ton weight limit.

The tender at the time stipulated that the existing abutments were to be used, but that they could only carry vertical loads. Sarrasin therefore designed a bridge made of two Vierendeel girders made of reinforced concrete, which outwardly resemble an arched bridge, with five openings that are mutually stiffened by four crossbars and the lower flange of which supports the deck slab. Sarrasin said that the bridge could hardly be built with lower material costs with the given specifications, at a time when labor costs were comparatively less important.
