The Ponte D. Luís I , often simply Ponte de Santarém called, is a road bridge in Portugal that the high above the right bank of the Tagus located village of Santarém with Almeirim combines and other parts of the country in the southeast side of the Tagus. It was far and wide the only bridge over the Tejo until the Ponte Salgueiro Maia motorway bridge was opened around four kilometers downstream in 2000 .

The two-lane national road N114 coming down from Santarém is first led on a truss over the narrow Rua dos Pescadores ( fishing street ) and the two tracks of the Linha do Norte to the actual, 570 m long river bridge. There the roadway lies 22 m above the river bed on nine wrought - iron truss girders with spans of 63 m each, which rest on mighty stone pillars . The extensive flood bed on the left bank is crossed by a 560 m long foreland bridge on iron supports connected by St. Andrew's crosses, which slopes gently towards the village of Tapada . The structure is around 1215 m long.

The bridge was built between 1876 and 1881 by the French companies Fives-Lille and Schneider-Creusot . In 1910 it received gas lighting , which was replaced by electric lighting in 1931. In the years 1950 to 1959, the bridge was reinforced according to plans by Edgar Cardoso and provided with a reinforced concrete deck that was widened from 6 m to 9 m . Around 2008 it was painted a strong red during another renovation.

The Ponte D. Luís I has been a listed building since 1997 .
