List of national roads in Portugal
The national roads in Portugal were established by decree on May 11, 1945. Its Portuguese name is "Estradas nacionais". They are marked with an "N" and the number in black letters on a white background. They are divided into three classes. The N1-N18 include the first class with the addition "itinerarios principais", the N101-N125 also belong to the first class, only without the addition. Class 2 includes the N201-N270 and Class 3 includes the N301-N398. Furthermore, the side branches of the streets ("Ramais") belong to the third class. They are identified by the main street number, followed by a hyphen, followed by a consecutive number. The N1 has the highest number of these with 16 side branches.
