Porta San Giovanni is a gate in the Aurelian Wall in the Italian capital, Rome , named after the nearby Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano . It was commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII. built and inaugurated in 1574. It is controversial whether Giacomo della Porta or Giacomo del Duca , who assisted Michelangelo in the construction of the Porta Pia, was used as the architect . Contemporary sources only mention "a famous architect named Giacomo". After the opening, the neighboring Porta Asinaria from the Aurelian era was closed.

The gate stands at the beginning of Via Appia Nuova and is made of simple ashlar stones , with a large bearded head on the outside as a decorative element. In 1926, when a new quarter was being built outside the gate, side arches were built to accommodate the growing traffic. They have been preserved to this day.

Every year since 1990, on the first of May , the Festa del lavoro , the event Concerto per celebrare il Primo Maggio has taken place on the Piazza di Porta San Giovanni , in which around 500,000 in 1996 and around 1.5 million visitors took part in 2006.
