Scheme of the Irish portal Tombarten

That between 4000 and 2500 BC Portal Tomb of Carnaghan ( Irish Baile Mhic Cearnacháin ; also called "Inch Island"), which was built in the Neolithic Age , lies west of Burnfoot and Muff in County Donegal in Ireland . In the British Isles, portal tombs are megalithic systems in which two equally high, upright stones with a door stone in between form the front of a chamber, which is covered with a sometimes huge capstone.

The Tomb portal is located about 400 meters from a crossroads in the south of the former island of Inch, which is connected to the mainland by a dam. Only the two portal stones over 2.5 meters high have been preserved in situ . The capstone has disappeared. A few side stones (one fell over) and some stones from the cairn , which had been severely reduced by plowing, survived.

Behind the portal is a large, secondary stone box that is about 1.0 meters deep and covered by a stone measuring about 2.4 × 1.8 meters that rests on smaller stones.
