Clogher Portal Tomb

The portal Tomb by Clogher is located on a small, south-facing, flat platform west of Lough Bridget, east of Tulla in the townland of Clogher ( Irish An Clochar , "the stony place") in County Clare in Ireland . In Ireland and Great Britain, portal tombs are megalithic systems in which two equally high, upright stones with a door stone in between form the front of a chamber that is covered with a sometimes huge capstone.

The southwest-northeast oriented Portal Tomb consists of a rectangular cap stone, which is 4.6 m long, 3.8 m wide and 1.8 m thick, two portal stones, a door stone, two side stones and an end stone. The weight of the capstone pushed the orthostats outward, causing the capstone to break and fall into the rectangular chamber. The western portal stone, a side stone and the end stone remained upright, while the eastern portal stone and its side stone fell over. The circular cairn extends to about 4 feet from the structure, and the stones are mostly on the east and north sides.
