Scheme of the Irish portal Tombarten

The portal Tomb of Leagaun ( Irish Liagán ) is located on the Aughrus Peninsula west of Clifden on a southern slope overlooking Streamstown Bay in Connemara in County Galway in Ireland . In the British Isles, portal tombs are megalithic systems in which two equally high, upright stones with a door stone in between form the front of a chamber, which is covered with a sometimes huge capstone.

The well-preserved north-west-south-east oriented portal Tomb lacks the capstone. It consists of a 3.5 × 1.7 m chamber with the rear facing an outcrop . The west side of the chamber consists of three stones and the east side consists of two stones. The entrance, in the southeast, is characterized by two portal stones of the same size that stand within the adjacent side stones. A single stone stands south of the western portal stone. The traces of the hill are preserved in the south and west.

Although it has been classified as a Portal Tomb, there is also the possibility that it could be the rear chamber of a Court Tomb .
