Portal Tomb by Mayo

The portal Tomb of Mayo is east of Cootehill in the townland of Mayo ( Irish Maigh Eo ) in County Cavan in Ireland . The ruined Portal Tomb sits on a low ridge north of Cohaw's Court Tombs and the R192 road. In the British Isles, portal tombs are megalithic systems in which two equally high, upright stones with a door stone in between form the front of a chamber, which is covered with a sometimes huge capstone.

The chamber integrated in a field border is more damaged. It is about 3.0 m long and 1.5 m wide. On the northern side there is an approximately 1.55 m high portal stone, which is approximately 0.85 m higher than the adjacent side stones. There is a side stone on the southern side, but the portal stone has fallen over. An outward leaning door stone marks the front of the northwest-oriented chamber. A plate in the chamber can be part of the capstone. Another part of a slab lies north of the fallen portal stone. A low end stone is inclined on the main axis of the chamber.
