Portal Tomb from Springfield
The Tomb portal from Springfield , which is marked on the OS maps as "Giant's Grave", is located on a small platform about 40 m west of a small stream and is now in the garden of a house in the townland of Springfield ( Irish Coill Fiaigh ) in Calstlebaldwin County Sligo in Ireland . In the British Isles, portal tombs are megalithic systems in which two equally high, upright stones with a door stone in between form the front of a chamber, which is covered with a sometimes huge capstone.
The south-facing Tomb portal stands at the southern end of an oval hill measuring approximately 9.0 × 7.0 m in area and 0.5 m high. There is a 1.95 m high portal stone in the west, next to it is a 0.45 m thick capstone. A 1.4 m high side stone stands on the east side. The 2.0 m long eastern portal stone has fallen over at the front of the chamber. All stones are made of pudding stone . About 8.0 m northeast of the chamber is a slightly curved, about 4.0 m long line of five stones that are not set into the ground and form the inside of a light earth wall.
