Straddle carrier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The straddle carrier (or Portalhubstapelwagen or portal stacking carriage ; English van carrier , straddle carrier , gantry lift ) is a special handling equipment for ISO containers . It is used as a transport vehicle at container terminals in ports . It is one of the industrial trucks .

The straddle carrier consists of a frame and a lifting device ( top spreader ) suspended in between , which can be moved vertically with lifting winches. The frame is equipped with a chassis with mostly eight wheels. The driver's cab (if present) is flanged to one end of the frame at the top.

The straddle carrier drives over a container that is on the floor or on a truck , the spreader locks with the four corner fittings of the container and lifts it up.

Reach stackers offer an alternative method of transporting containers .
