Portianus
Portianus or Porcianus (French: Saint Pourçain ; * unknown; † after 532) is the name of a saint of the Catholic Church who was venerated in France , especially in the Bourbonnais . His name appears in the Martyrologium Romanum .
biography
Very little is known about the life of St. Portianus; much has legendary traits: he lived and worked in the 6th century, was a freed slave and hermit who founded a monastery on the banks of the Sioule river near today's small town of Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule , of which he later became abbot . He turned against the attacks of the Merovingian king Theuderich I on the common people.
Adoration
Portianus is especially venerated in the Bourbonnais region in northern Auvergne , where several churches and places bear his name. His feast day is November 24th.
