The city is known for its historic golf club and for the neighboring golf course designed by the German golfer Bernhard Langer , which belongs to the Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links. Both golf courses are on the same spit as the popular 4 km long Velvet Strand (" velvet beach "). At the northern end of the beach there is a Martello tower typical of the Irish east coast , which is now used as an apartment.
