Porto dos Cacos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Porto dos Cacos is an archaeological site and ancient Roman port on the right bank of the Ribeira das Enguias in Portugal . The excavation site is located in the saltworks area around four kilometers east of Alcochete in the Setúbal district , near today's main road N 118.

Excavations revealed three ceramic kilns , a large number of amphorae and a necropolis . The ovens were dated between the 1st and 5th centuries. The artifacts of clay and wood products suggest that clay pots and other products were made and shipped there until the 8th century.

The easy access to the river also suggests that it was a settlement area of the Romans. Some of the excavated amphorae contained the Roman spice garum . The composition of the spice found suggests that it was made through fermentation of local fish, such as the European anchovy , which came from the nearby lake area of the Tejo, and with the salt from the salt pans. The proximity to the salt pans also underlines this assumption, as does the name history of the city of Alcochete.

In 2011, Porto dos Cacos was classified by the Ministry of Culture as an area "Sítio de Interest Público" and placed under special protection. This was published with Regulation No. 591/2011.
