Posorja is a fishing village in Ecuador . It is located about 120 km southeast of Guayaquil at the confluence of the Río Guayas in the Gulf of Guayaquil . As the capital of a rural parish, the place belongs to the canton of Guayaquil in the province of Guayas . The parish has about 30,000 inhabitants (2005).

Posorja is located on the Morro Canal of the Gulf of Guayaquil. On the other side of this channel is the island of Puná . Since fishing here is largely done in the traditional way and has been increasingly displaced by modern fishing fleets from abroad, the population is relatively poor today; 60% of the labor force are considered underemployed. The most important employer besides the fishery are three large fish factories in the parish area, which account for 70% of the production of tuna products in Ecuador. Among them is Negocios Industriales Reales SA (Nirsa) , the largest fish factory in Ecuador. The economic activity of the place will revive significantly in the future, since in December 2006 the construction of a new international port with harbor basin for ships with up to 14 m draft was started. This means that large ships unable to call at the port of Guayaquil will in future unload their cargo in Posorja. The investment volume is estimated at 450 million US dollars. At the same time, the touristic upgrade of the existing port embankment and the associated revitalization and modernization of the town center are planned.

The name of the place goes back to a legendary seer named Posorja , who came to the coast of today's Santa Elena (west of Posorja) around 1530 and the Inca Atahualpa won the victory over his half-brother Huáscar in the War of the Inca Succession and the subsequent destruction by white men should have predicted.

Posorja can be reached by bus from Guayaquil via Playas .
