Post Bridge (Hamburg)

The former post bridge

The Postbrücke was a bridge over the Bleichenfleet in Hamburg . The mill canal used to begin north of the bridge.

location

The Postbrücke is located in the district of Hamburg-Mitte in the Neustadt and spanned the Bleichenfleet until 1975. Poststrasse runs across the bridge, which was created as a new connection next to the post office building ( Alte Post ) after the great fire in 1842 .

history

The building was erected in 1845/46. From 1894 the ring line of the tram ran over the bridge. However, since there was only space for one track there, traffic after 1900 (then line 26) was also directed over the Jungfernstieg , depending on the direction .

In 1908/09, the footpath was widened and made of reinforced concrete.

Due to the war damage and the increasing surface traffic, the permissible axle load on the bridge was limited to 10 tons on June 23, 1947.

In 1951 the wooden pavement was replaced by asphalt, which had to be repaired in 1962.

As part of a bridge repair work, the bridge openings to the Bleichenfleet were closed with a reinforced concrete angled retaining wall in 1975. The cavities under the bridge were filled with gravel sand and concrete. Since then, this structure is no longer a bridge.

In 1974 the mill canal , which formerly ran north of the bridge, was partially filled in, which served as an emergency outlet for the town hall lock during floods until the 1950s . The backfilling took place after the canal became superfluous in 1973 when the town hall lock was widened. The remaining backfilling took place in early 1976.

In 1998, the bridge load-bearing effect was officially lifted in accordance with the building authorities.

architecture

The post bridge rests on wooden piles driven into the ground. The vaults of the two-arched bridge (clear width of the arches each 5.73 meters) are made of brick like the entire bridge . The bridge had a total length of about 28 meters and a width of 19.10 meters.

Two lanes with a total width of 10.5 meters and two footpaths (south: 4.50 and north: 4.10 meters) run across the bridge. The road surface was originally wooden pavement.

A district heating pipe runs under the bridge.
