The Eliteserien has been the top division in Norwegian men's handball since 1965/66 . Earlier names were Gildeserien (? –2005), Postenligaen (2007–2014) and GRUNDIGligaen (2014–2017). The organizer is the Norwegian Handball Federation ( NHF ). The current champion of the 2017/18 season is Elverum Håndball .
mode
The game mode has changed several times since it was founded.
Main round
In the round of the league table , twelve clubs play each against each other in the round two rounds to win the series champions who qualify for the EHF Champions League .
Play-offs
The first eight teams play in two groups of four again in the first and second leg. The first in the group then play in a back and forth match against the runner-up in the other group. The winners of these semi-finals then determine the play-off winner ( Sluttspillvinnere ) in two finals .
descent
The last two teams of the league round are relegated directly, the penultimate plays in the relegation against the third-placed team in the 1st divisjon .

The winner of the point game round ( Seriemestere ) was from 1966 to 1975, 1980 and 1998 to 2004 Norwegian champions. In the years 1976 to 1979, 1981 to 1997 and since 2005, the winner of the play-off round ( Sluttspillvinnere ) becomes champion.
