Postcode (Iceland)

Postcode areas in Iceland after the first two digits

The postcodes in Iceland are three-digit numeric. From them you can read off the approximate geographical position and whether it is an internal or external delivery zip code or a PO box zip code. In Iceland, as in most European countries, they are placed in front of the post office location. They start in the southwest and follow the course of the coast roughly clockwise.

The following postcode groups are assigned:

  • 101–116: Reykjavík (delivery, with gaps)
  • 121–132: Reykjavík (mailboxes, with gaps) ( pósthólf )
  • 150 and 155: Reykjavík (major customers: 150 offices, 155 major banks)
  • 170–270: Suburbs of Reykjavík and the Suðurnes Peninsula
  • 300-380: West Iceland
  • 400–471: western peninsula of the Westfjords
  • 500–580: East coast of the Westfjords and western Nordland
  • 600–690: east north country and north east coast
  • 700–785: East fjords and southeast coast to Skeiðarárjökull glacier
  • 800–880: Südland and south coast to the Skeiðarárjökull glacier (here counterclockwise)
  • 900 and 902: Westman Islands

From postcode 170, the general rule applies to the third digit of the postcode:

  • For post offices and the delivery districts within localities, the zip code ends with 0 or 5
  • for associated delivery areas out of town, the zip code ends with 1 (or 6, if in town 5) ( dreifbýli )
  • PO boxes are given a zip code with 2 in the last position.
  • If necessary, further delivery areas are added.

Example Akureyri

The city of Akureyri can be considered a comprehensive example :

  • 600 Akureyri (delivery to the old town, south of the Glerá river )
  • 601 Akureyri (scattered settlements in the Eyjafjörður fjord )
  • 602 Akureyri (mailboxes)
  • 603 Akureyri (delivery north of the Glerá river)

In the inner-city area, postcodes 600 and 603 are assigned for delivery, while the surrounding scattered settlements all have postcode 601.
