potential
Potential (from Latin potentia "strength, power"), also potential , means the ability to develop; Possibilities not yet exhausted. The term is used in many fields:
biology
- Action potential , temporary, characteristic deviation of the membrane potential of a living cell from its resting potential
- Membrane potential and resting potential , electrochemical quantities on the membrane of living cells, measured in millivolts
chemistry
- Chemical potential , thermodynamic quantity, measured in J / mol
- Electrochemical potential , thermodynamic size of charged particles in electrochemistry, measured in J / mol
- Electrode potential , a quantity in electrochemistry, measured in volts
grammar
- Potentialis , mode for describing a possible event
mathematics
- Potential function , a twofold continuously differentiable real-valued, d. H. scalar function that is a solution to Poisson's equation, e.g. B. a scalar potential
- Scalar potential , a scalar field, the gradient of which provides a vector field
- Vector potential , a vector field whose rotation again provides a vector field
- Nodal potential , a function on the nodes of a graph
physics
- Potential (physics) , ability of a conservative force field to make a test specimen do work; alternatively the scalar field, which describes this ability of the force field. These include in particular:
- Velocity potential or streaming potential, scalar field, the gradient of which supplies the velocity vectors of an eddy-free fluid movement (potential flow)
- Thermodynamic potential
psychology
- Performance potential (psychology) , the inherent prerequisite for a person's energy performance
Economics
- Potential factor , one of the production factors
- Potential (game theory) , a special function on the set of all strategy combinations in a game
- Production potential , macroeconomic term to designate the production that would be possible if all production factors were fully utilized
Sports
- Handicap , theoretical and current skill level of a golfer.
