The city of Potsdam had ten city gates , four of which are visible today in their entirety and two more in fragments (Berliner and Neustädter Tor). The Gates presented the passages are built by the early 18th century and Akzise- Desertationsmauer. They were from 1722 under the Soldier King Friedrich Wilhelm I. erected. The excise was a consumption tax for cities based on the Dutch model since 1680. After the tax was abandoned with the Stein-Hardenberg reforms , the gates were used to collect the meal and slaughter tax until 1909. Nevertheless, some gates (old and new water gate, water gate) and most of the city fortifications disappeared during the imperial era .

At the end of the 19th century, the Nauener Tor and the Berliner Tor were adapted to the increasing traffic without affecting the overall artistic appearance of the time they were built. In World War II, all the gates were damaged. The city council had the archway of the Berliner Tor and the ruins of the Neustädter Tor demolished. Today only a gatehouse reminds of the Berliner Tor, of the Neustädter Tor, built according to plans by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff , only a rebuilt obelisk remained near the former location. The cellar gate was reconstructed in 2016/2017.
