Hellerma made her debut as a critic in 1977, and published her first novella in a magazine in 1989. Her first book (and first novel) was published in 1997. Alkeemia (Alchemy) is about the love of an approximately forty-year-old woman for a much younger man and has feminist traits, which was criticized by a critic, but generally praised: She made her debut several times compared to Tõnu Õnnepalu .

In her later books, too, women are at the center of the plot. Sometimes they have the same problems, so that Hellerma has criticized thematic repetition, although their style was still praised. When the author surprisingly published her first volume of poetry Seniitvalgus (Zenitlicht) in 2014 , the respected poet colleague Karl Martin Sinijärv did not spare praise and compared her to Kalev Kesküla . Hellerma has also written travel and children's books.
