Hans-Joachim Giersberg

Hans-Joachim Giersberg (born March 9, 1938 in Liegnitz ; † April 29, 2014 in Potsdam ) was a German art historian and general director of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation in Berlin-Brandenburg .

Career

Giersberg studied art history, history and ethnology at the Humboldt University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1975 with a thesis on the role of Frederick II of Prussia as a client and master builder . He was initially a research assistant in Park Sanssouci and from 1978 director of the palaces.

From 1991 to 2001 he was director general of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg (provisional until 1995). He has pushed for the inclusion of the palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin as UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

Hans-Joachim Giersberg is buried in Potsdam in the Bornstedter cemetery .
