The PowerBook G4 12 " is a notebook of the company Apple from the PowerBook -series. It had a 12-inch LCD screen (visible 25.7 cm × 18.6 cm, diagonal 30.8 cm), the PowerPC-G4 processor and a characteristic titanium / aluminum housing. It was optionally equipped with a combo drive or a burner .

The housing is made of an aluminum alloy. The underside of the housing consists of a molded aluminum part and rests on the tabletop with four small plastic feet. The aim of the design of the display hinge was to prevent it from breaking off in the event of a fall. It weighs approx. 2.1 kg and the external dimensions are (W × D × H) 27.7 cm × 22 cm × 3 cm.

The AirPort antennas are located behind gray bulges on the left and right of the screen on the upper part of the housing. The slot for the AirPort card is accessible from the battery compartment.

It has no keyboard backlight and no PCMCIA slot.

There are two variants: the former only has a VGA screen output, the later has a mini- DVI connection.

The device, which was available from January 2003 to May 2006, initially experienced rapid sales, but sales dropped noticeably after the introduction of the iBook G4 .

The PowerBook G4 12 ″, which was developed under the code name Thresher , was awarded a prize in March 2004 by the iF Industrie Forum Design for its successful design. MacOS up to and including Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 can be operated on this PowerBook model . Even Mac OS 9 runs due to the PowerPC architecture. Since the refreshment of the PowerBook model series on January 31, 2005, the device has two functions that are new for the time, on the one hand the Sudden Motion Sensor patented by Apple to protect the hard drive if the device falls, and on the other hand a new touchpad , with which it is possible to scroll horizontally and vertically in windows by placing two fingers.

Certain lithium-ion batteries , manufactured by Sony Corporation in Japan, have been identified by Apple as a safety hazard (due to the rare occurrence of overheating) and have been voluntarily recalled in a worldwide free exchange program in late 2006.

In 2006 the PowerBook G4 series was replaced by the MacBook Pros . These work with an Intel Core Duo processor .
