Powertrain of a construction machine

Under the drive train of a vehicle are in the automotive technology , all components understood that in the vehicle the power for the drive are then transmitted to the ground.

Drivetrain in vehicles with internal combustion engines only

In the conventional drive train, in which an internal combustion engine is used, this includes the engine with the flywheel (possibly as a dual-mass flywheel ), the clutch with the vehicle transmission , in multi-track vehicles the differential , the drive shafts or quick-release axles and the wheels. In the case of a multi-lane rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle, additional cardan shafts or cardan shafts , the viscous coupling , the possible reduction gear, the universal joint or the flexible disk , the center bearing and, if necessary, the center differential (s) are added.

Electrification of the drive train

More recently, automotive development has been working towards electrifying the drive train. This means installing electric motors in the drive train in addition to the conventional combustion engine, which in certain situations can take on the task of driving the vehicle more efficiently than the combustion engine. If both drive components are installed in the vehicle, one speaks of a hybrid vehicle .

In contrast, the diesel-electric drive , in which there is no mechanical connection between the combustion engine and the electric drive motor, has long been established .

An electric vehicle no longer has an internal combustion engine, the drive train is greatly reduced, as essential parts such as the flywheel, clutch and gearbox can be omitted. However, a motor is often used for the driven axle, so that drive shafts and a differential are still required.

Wheel hub motor

The design of the wheel hub motor requires practically no additional components. There are versions as both combustion and electric motors.
