Powiśle (Polish for close to the Vistula ) is a sub-district of Warsaw district Śródmieście (downtown). It is located between the Vistula and its embankment below Warsaw's old town .

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the area was populated by mostly poorer residents. Industrialization around the 19th century changed this only a little. It retained its character as a rather poor district until it was almost completely demolished during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 . After the Second World War , the area was partially rebuilt and Mariensztat in the north of Powiśle was the first completed district in Warsaw. In the future, the area is to function as a campus of the University of Warsaw , for example the University Library Warsaw and several faculty buildings were built in the area.
