Frederick Maurice Powicke

Sir Frederick Maurice Powicke (born June 16, 1879 in Alnwick , † May 19, 1963 in Oxford ) was a British medieval historian.

Life

Powicke was the son of the clergyman and historian of Puritanism Frederick James Powicke. He studied at Owens College , Manchester and Balliol College, Oxford University , where he was a student of Thomas Frederick Tout . From 1908 to 1915 he was a fellow at Merton College, Oxford. From 1909 to 1919 he was Professor of Modern History at Queen's University Belfast . From 1919 to 1928 he was Professor of Medieval History at Victoria University of Manchester . In 1927 he was a Ford Lecturer in Oxford and in 1928 he became Regius Professor of Modern History there. In 1947 he retired. Since 1927 he was a member of the British Academy .

He developed Oxford into a center of medieval studies in England, taking a more biographically oriented approach (e.g. taking into account family and friendship relationships) than was usual in Oxford at the time. He wrote the volume on the 13th century Oxford History of England. In addition to medieval history, he also dealt with modern history, for example he published a book about Bismarck in 1914.

In 1946 he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor . He was a multiple honorary doctor. From 1920 to 1933 he was on the council of the Chetham Society , a society for the publication of historical sources. From 1933 to 1937 he was President of the Royal Historical Society .

Richard William Southern was one of his students .
