Sir George Harry Smith Willis GCB (born November 11, 1823 in Sopley Park, † November 29, 1900 in Bournemouth ) was a general in the British Army .

Life

Willis was drafted into the 77th (East Middlesex) Regiment in 1841. He serves in the Crimean War and was in command of a grenadier company in the Battle of Inkerman . In 1857 he returned to England and was appointed Commanding Officer of 2nd Bn 6th (Warwickshire) Regiment. In 1873 he was appointed Assistant Quartermaster General on the Army General Staff and in April 1878 then General Officer Commanding Northern District . In 1882 he was sent to Egypt and commanded troops at Al-Magfar and Tell al-Mahuta. He was also involved in the capture of Mahsama and the second battle of Qassassin. In 1884 he was appointed to the GOC Southern District and retired from military service in 1890 and was run as a candidate of the Conservative Party for the general election in 1892, but did not achieve the necessary majority. He died in Bournemouth in 1900 after a long illness and is buried in Sopley .
