Presidential election in the Dominican Republic 2012

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2012 Dominican presidential election took place on May 20, 2012. A total of 6.5 million Dominicans were called to cast their votes. Under the 1966 Constitution , the Dominican Republic is a presidential republic. The head of state and chief executive officer (head of government) is the president , who is directly elected for four years . Direct re-election was banned in the constitution in 1994, allowed again in 2004 (one-time direct re-election) and banned again in 2010.

Six candidates ran for election. According to the polls, only Hipólito Mejía from the social democratic Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), already president from 2000 to 2004, and Danilo Medina from the liberal Partido de la Liberación Dominicana , party friend of the outgoing President Leonel Fernández , had a chance of being elected . The remaining four candidates were given no chance of being elected.

Danilo Medina just won the absolute majority in the first ballot, which means that there was no run-off in a second ballot, which is provided for by the constitution in the event that none of the candidates achieve an absolute majority in the first ballot. He received 51.21% of the vote, Mejía 46.95%. The wife of the outgoing President, Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, was elected Vice-President.

The Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC), which suffered steady decline after the death of its leader Joaquín Balaguer in 2002, did not run with its own candidate for the first time, but took part in the electoral alliance with the PLD. He contributed 5.87% of the vote to the winning result of the alliance.
