The Prédio Spence e Lemos is an office building in the Mozambican capital Maputo . The building, designed by Pancho Guedes in the style of modernism, is located on Praça dos Trabalhadores and today houses the state-owned oil company Petromoc .

history

Due to the reluctance of the colonial administration in Mozambique, Pancho Guedes mainly designed buildings for private clients. In 1958, the Spence e Lemos company commissioned him to design a new company headquarters on what was then Praça Mac Mahon . Guedes designed an eight-story house in the shape of an "L", with the northeast side facing Rua Consiglieri Pedro , the northwest facing the square. Guedes paid particular attention to the design of the facade, with which he wanted to protect the office workers from the midday sun coming from the north and ventilate the building. The building was completed in 1964.

Today the building houses the headquarters of the Mozambican state oil company Petromoc . As the condition of the building did not meet the representative requirements, the company had it renovated between 2012 and 2014. The Portuguese architecture firm Promontorio took on the contract. In the course of the renovation of the building, another floor and a renewal of the outer facade were given, in which the wall elements between the windows were given the colors of the company's corporate identity and the ventilation elements were removed.
