Inspection stickers

A test badge (or assessment badge ) is the externally recognizable sign that a monitoring organization has determined the correctness of a monitored object or its behavior with regard to relevant legal or other provisions on the day of the test and at the same time - as a rule - the reference to the time of the next due examination. Test badges are part of the test marks .

On motor vehicles

  • Most motorists in Germany have come into contact with two test stickers in the past:
    • with the inspection sticker about the general inspection of the technical condition of the vehicle (formerly also known as the TÜV sticker ). It documents the vehicle inspection required by Section 29 StVZO and is permanently attached to the rear license plate of the vehicle (round sticker). The next due test date can be found on the sticker as follows: the last two digits of the due year are printed in the middle, the month points vertically upwards. The conspicuous black marking is always on 1-12-11 and does not indicate the month of the exam, but rather, in conjunction with the color of the badge, its "clock position" enables the security staff to make a quick visual assessment (e.g. when driving past).
    • with the test badge valid until 2009 for the examination of the engine management and emission control system (UMA, formerly also known as ASU badge or AU badge ), prescribed in § 47a StVZO. Attached to the front license plate, this sticker signaled compliance with the emissions standard (hexagonal sticker). It was discontinued at the turn of the year 2009/2010. The UMA is now included in the main inspection.
  • In Austria, vehicle inspection badges are referred to as assessment badges in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Act (“Pickerl”).
