The Praça 8 de Maio (dt .: Place of May 8) is a square in the city center of the Portuguese seaside resort of Figueira da Foz .
Its southern end is bounded by the Rua da República and, like it, is located in the area that was removed from the Mondego River in 1784 . The square has had its current name since 1880, after having long been called Praça Nova (Engl .: New Square).
The name of the square commemorates May 8th, 1834, the day the liberal troops reached Figueira in the Miguelistenkrieg . The square is also known by its historical name Praça Nova , in contrast to the nearby older Largo Luís de Camões , also known as Praça Velha (German: Old Square).
In the square is a monument to Manuel Fernandes Tomás , a Figueira-born activist of the liberal revolution in Portugal , erected in 1911 . A taxi stand has been set up on the square, which is why the square is sometimes called Praça dos táxis in everyday life .
