features

The splendid headstand is 16 to 18 cm long and has an elongated body that is only slightly flattened on the sides. The color is characterized by three dark green, dark brown to brown-black longitudinal stripes that extend from the head to the base of the tail and are separated from each other by two bright yellow to whitish-gray longitudinal stripes. The fins, especially the dorsal and caudal fins, are bright red or the base is red and the distal fin end is transparent or yellowish. The throat and the region above the pelvic fins are purple to purple in color. The anal fin can have a black border in front. Very old animals are almost a single color, dark brown. Males are smaller and more elongated than females.

In addition to the nominate form , two other subspecies have been described, Anostomus anostomus longus from the upper Amazon region is said to be slimmer, Anostomus anostomus brevior from Guyana has a taller body, therefore more scales in a transverse row and a longer snout.

Way of life

Magnificent headbirds feed primarily on plants, as well as worms, crustaceans and insects. The reproduction is so far little known. The fish should spawn in dense vegetation and the males should stay near the spawning site after spawning. Adult animals kept in aquariums are often quite incompatible with one another.
