The black tetra (Crenuchinae) are a subfamily of the black tetra (Crenuchidae) that occurs in the Amazon and the Rio Negro . It consists of two genera, the genus Crenuchus and the genus Poecilicharax .
Differing from the typical appearance of tetras the body shape is more kärpflingsartig squat and overly stretched. A short gastrointestinal tract and a deep gap in the mouth indicate a predatory way of life. The main sources of food are likely to be invertebrates and fry. Blue tetra reach a total length of about six centimeters.
A characteristic feature of this group is an organ with currently unknown function on the top of the head.
