Precarotopia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prekärotopia (original spelling : PREKÄROTOPIA ) is a precarious singspiel by Beate Engl , Leonie Felle and Franka Kaßner . It is about the utopian attempt to change together. The world premiere took place on March 30, 2019 in the Kunstbau of the Lenbachhaus in Munich .

An installation of sculptures, music and videos served as the backdrop for the performances. This installation was on view as an exhibition from March 31 to April 22 in the Kunstbau of the Lenbachhaus in Munich . The three artists combine the different levels of sculpture, film, music and performance into a collectively developed and produced total work of art . Historical models such as the Threepenny Opera or the Triadic Ballet serve as inspiration.

Prekärotopia received the Art Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 2019 .

action

The plot of the Singspiel is told through the texts of the thirteen songs.

The three characters Poupée, Speaker and Trickster live in a fictional system Prekärotopia, on which they take different views and points of view: Poupée lives contentedly on the naive, colorful surface of Prekärotopia; Speaker criticizes and revolts against the illusory world and wants to change the system; Trickster ironizes and comments, but remains stuck in the system. Spurred on by Speakers' activism, the three protagonists jointly destroy the existing hierarchies and fail in an attempt to create something new and actively change it. The collective euphoria of departure and a new beginning ends in the disillusionment and isolation of the characters.

characters

Speaker (played by Beate Engl) is an idealistic activist. She courageously accuses social hierarchies, but is absorbed by money and power itself in the course of the play. At the end she freezes to the lectern.

Poupée (played by Leonie Felle) believes in love and in self-determined, equal action. But in the course of history she realizes the contradictions of the system and her supposed freedom is exposed as naive self-deception.

Trickster (played by Franka Kaßner) is a sharp-sighted free spirit and a vicious mocker. Although she sees through the system and recognizes its injustices, she can only ironize them, not solve them.

music

For the precarious Singspiel, the artists wrote and composed thirteen songs together. The soundtrack was recorded together with musicians. Music and texts in German and English form the basis of the Singspiel. The music moves between punk and synth pop, chanson, swing and fairground sounds. Through this musical range, the three characters of the figures are worked out and their individual characteristics and emotions underlined.

The soundtrack was released on vinyl LP in a numbered edition of 500 by the Munich label gutfeeling records .

sculpture

Beate Engl, Leonie Felle and Franka Kaßner worked closely together to develop all sculptures as stage and exhibition elements. The focus is on the staircase sculpture “Hierarchy”, which the protagonists use both as a performative instrument and as a stage.

The three characters each have their own sculptural elements as attributes: Trickster drives z. B. with the “Broiler” on stage, a mobile sculpture in the form of a larger than life roast chicken; Poupeé is accompanied by “Poupées Disco”, a colored light installation; Speaker surrenders to the “hand of capital”, a sculpture in the form of a huge extendable arm.

Movie

Together with a camera team, the artists produced music videos for the thirteen songs. The videos underline and intensify the visual access to the individual figures. They serve as an extension of the plot and show the characters with their sculptural attributes in fictional settings. Cinematic means create an emotional atmosphere that characterizes the characters on the one hand and creates imaginary spaces on the other.

performance

The story in thirteen scenes is sung and played by the artists during the performance. They embody their respective characters in self-designed costumes: Speaker played by Beate Engl, Poupée played by Leonie Felle, Trickster played by Franka Kaßner. The interactions and actions of the characters do not illustrate the plot, but remain abstract and pictorial.

For example, the three performers in the scene “Breaking down the hierarchy” deconstruct the staircase sculpture to the rhythm of a drum improvisation. The acoustic and sculptural choreography is accompanied by a film image of a destructive act.

In each scene, performance and sculptural elements are intertwined in different ways with the levels of film and music. The narration and the conflicts of the characters are deepened by this multidimensionality.
