The prementum (lat. Mentum = "chin") is the final part of the basal, fused section of the lower lip ( labium ) of the insects and thus part of the mouthparts , the mentum . The submentum is usually in two parts, but can also grow together and, like all other components of the mouthparts, be designed very differently depending on the type and group.

In the stinging-sucking mouthparts of mosquitoes in particular , the prementum is greatly elongated and forms the sheath for the stinging bristles. The prementum of the dragonfly larvae , which together with the mentum forms the hinge of the trap mask, is also greatly elongated .
