Society of St. Salvator

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Society of St. Salvator is a Catholic brotherhood .

The brotherhood was founded as a community around 1190/1200 by priests from the Straubing area, but from 1300 it was a community of priests and lay people. The Straubing Church of St. Veit has been its seat since 1450 . The prayer community of men and women who tries to live the Christian faith in everyday life comes together here several times a year. The brotherhood is committed to charity and culture. It also sponsors the renovation work on the St. Jakob Basilica and its St. Vitus Church.

Since 2003, the brotherhood has been primarily called the St. Salvator Brotherhood to avoid confusion with canonical brotherhoods of priests . However, it continues to see itself as a brotherhood of priests, on the one hand because of the centuries-old tradition, on the other hand because it wants to draw attention to the teaching of the Second Vatican Council that every Christian has a share in the priesthood of Jesus Christ with his baptism , i.e. is called to to live and pass on the good news.

The patron saint of the brotherhood is Christ as Salvator mundi , as the Redeemer of the world, who invites everyone to be with him and to accept his salvation.
