Prince Gong

Prince Gong (Àixīnjuéluó Yìxīn, called "First Prince Gong") (born January 11, 1833 in Beijing , † May 29, 1898 ibid) was the sixth son of the Chinese Emperor Daoguang . His mother was a second-class concubine who was later honored with the title of Empress Yia Jingcheng . He was the younger half-brother of Emperor Xianfeng and the older half-brother of Prince Chun I.

Prince Gong was one of the closest confidants of the empress widows Cixi and Ci'an and with them ruler of the youthful emperor Tongzhi . After the dismissal and execution of the former regent Sushun, in which Gong played an intensive role, Cixi and Ci'an left him with considerable influence on imperial politics. After Emperor Tongzhi died unexpectedly at the age of only 18, Ci'an wanted a son of Gongs to be raised to the new emperor, but the co-regent Cixi prevented this. Instead, the son of his younger half-brother became the new emperor under the name Guangxu . Prince Gong got into final conflict with Cixi in 1880 and was dismissed because he is said to have insulted her. In 1891 she called him back into politics after the death of Prince Chun I.
