The Prinzenteich is a park-like area with a gondola pond on the southern outskirts of Eisenach in Thuringia .
location
The Prinzenteich is located in the Eisenacher Südviertel at the confluence of Philipp-Kühner-Straße and Bundesstraße 19 in Mariental .
size
The 6370 square meter pond is 210 meters long and 45 meters at its widest point. The pond is fed and drained by the Marienbach .
history
The goose lawn , as the area was called in the late Middle Ages, was a swampy depression in front of the city; this was planned by the city administration in 1854 for the construction of a fire water pond.
The Duchess Helene von Orleans , who was living in exile in Eisenach at the time, supported the construction of the pond with monetary donations, her sons used the ice surface for ice-skating in winter, which is why this pond was named Prinzenteich in the population .
With the progressive development of the front Mariental, the pond area was framed by the villa colony Marienhöhe and further developed with the installation of a swan island in the northern part and a circumferential promenade . A boat rental and snack bar was added later, and the Eisenach tram and its successor buses received a Prinzenteich stop , which still exists today.
