Princess Zelda ( Japanese : ゼ ル ダ 姫 , Zeruda Hime ) is a fictional character in the video game series The Legend of Zelda developed by Nintendo . The figure was developed by Shigeru Miyamoto and already appeared in the first Zelda title The Legend of Zelda . The figure is named after the American writer Zelda Fitzgerald .
Although Zelda is eponymous for the series, it is mostly just the pursued innocence . The player controls Link , the protagonist of the video game series, and usually has to defeat the antagonist Ganon (or Ganondorf ). Several Zelda games use the princess-dragon principle of the courtly novel : Zelda is kidnapped or imprisoned by Ganon , which urges Link to save her. Some games show Zelda's magical abilities and her importance to Hyrule . Zelda's alter ego is the ninja Sheik in Ocarina of Time and the pirate Tetra in The Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass .
Princess Zelda is also a playable character in the crossover - fighting game series Super Smash Bros.
