Pro Juventute is an Austrian child and youth welfare organization. The administrative headquarters of the private and independent organization is in Salzburg . It is financed through donations and public funds and has been awarded the Austrian seal of approval for donations since 2002 . The control body of the Pro Juventute Association is the Board of Trustees . It performs a function similar to that of a supervisory board. Since it was founded in 1947, more than 5,000 children have been helped.

history

On the occasion of the great hardship of the war orphans at the end of the Second World War, the association was founded in Salzburg as the First Austrian Children's Village Association by the married couples Schubert, Maislinger and Walla. The purpose should be the establishment of a children's village based on the example of the Pestalozzidorf , in which the children will be able to grow up in a family-like group until they become independent. From around 1950 the Pro Juventute (lat. "For the youth") was added, which quickly became the main name.

From 1948 to June 2005 cards were issued for balloon and airship mail. Domestic and foreign philatelists were able to support the organization by purchasing the receipts under the motto “collectors help children”. It was discontinued because the decline in sales would have resulted in higher expenses than income. From 1950 to 1955, the first four Pro-Juventute houses for as many large families were built in Rottenmann, Styria. The children were looked after by voluntary, honorary foster parents.

In Rottenmann, Styria, the first 4 large family houses were built by 1955. Care was taken by volunteer foster parents who lived with their own children and the foster children in a Pro Juventute house. Over the next 35 years until 1990, the idea of a “large family house” was implemented in many Austrian municipalities. 27 Pro Juventute facilities were opened and occupied during this period. The actual war orphans have now been taken care of and more and more “social orphans” need to be accommodated. From 1990 to 2000 the focus of the organization was expanded to include advice for families and children, and Pro Juventute's family advice service became an integral part of the offer.

In 1990 the first socio-educational youth housing community was opened in Rehhof near Salzburg. Foster mothers and fathers were employed from 1993, the spouse continued his previous job. In the years to come, Pro Juventute phased out the family living group model in favor of socio-educational shared apartments with professional staff on a rotating basis.

Pro Juventute has had the Austrian seal of approval for donations since 2002.
