The genus Procambarus from the superfamily of crayfish (Astacoidea) is native to North and Central America and includes u. a. the parthenogenetic marble cancer and the Florida blue cancer ( P. alleni ). Most of the species in the genus are found in southern North America .

With over 140 species, Procambarus is the most numerous genus of the crayfish.

features

All species that are included in this genus are characterized by a similar structure of the body in the head-chest area (front body) and the structured abdomen. Both are covered by a thick armor ( carapace ). There are five pairs of legs on the front body, with the foremost pair of legs being transformed into large scissors. The rest of the legs serve as walking legs with gills hanging on them, with which the crayfish breathes.

The limbs of the 1st abdominal ring of the male are transformed into a gonopodium . The female carries the eggs and later the newly hatched young on the underside of the abdomen. Typical of the genus are small, thorn-shaped hooks on the base element of the male's striding legs to hold the females during copulation ( ischium hook) , the sperm store ( annulus ventralis ) of the females and, to match, the sperm groove of the males.

Cancer plague

In the meantime, many species of the genus Procambarus are distributed worldwide as a neozoon . All species are possible carriers of crayfish plague , a disease caused by water molds such as Aphanomyces astaci that affects all European crayfish species and endangers their population.
